Your Mind Is Doing More Than You Think: The Science Behind Human Behavior

Scientists have broadened our understanding of the world through remarkable discoveries. They have answered questions that remained a mystery for centuries. Yet the human mind has still not been fully decoded. We can measure the stars, but we cannot always measure a single thought of a human. Strangely enough, even the person thinking it often cannot predict what comes next. Before we proceed with indepth knowledge about the science of human behavior, I would like to ask you a simple question. How did you wake up this morning? Was that an alarm clock which woke you? Perhaps someone called your name. Or maybe your eyes simply opened on their own. But is that really how you woke up? Look a little more closely. Before you even left your bed, your brain had already begun making decisions. Should I open my eyes now? Should I stay on the bed for five more minutes? Then someone spoke to you. It was there that you finally made up your mind to get out of the bed and welcome a new day. This blog is going to be an incredible journey of exploring why people behave differently.

Is Human Behavior a Science or Not?

This has remained a biggest question for numerous psychologists, whether human behavior can really be categorized in sciences or not. To investigate this, let us first look at the definition of science. All scientific disciplines are based on authentic observations and evidence. One can’t deny that fact that thoughts and emotions are invisible to the human eye. Therefore the psychologists investigate the outward behaviors , through which these inner experiences are expressed.

Can Human Behavior Be Measured Like Physics?

At first, psychology may not seem like a science. As discussed earlier, we cannot hold happiness in our hands. We cannot weigh fear on a scale. We cannot open the mind and watch a thought take shape. So how do psychologists study something they cannot see? The answer is simple. They don’t look at thoughts directly,  they look at behavior. They ask questions, run carefully designed studies, compare different groups, collect solid evidence, and hunt for patterns hidden within it all. Bit by bit, these quiet observations add up to something powerful, the real insight into how the human mind thinks and behaves.

Consider this: a teacher wants to find out whether a little encouragement can make students speak up more in class. So the teacher compares one group that gets regular encouragement with another that doesn’t. If the encouraged group speaks up more, that’s evidence, proof that a simple word of support can shape behavior. As a result of the teacher’s research on both groups, one which was encouraged more, came up with more confidence and active participation. Somehow, we can say that the psychologists follow the path of the scientists. The initial point is the investigation, which arises from the curiosity of a human. Further it moves towards prediction. After collecting evidence, the results are finally evaluated. The process is repeated to authenticate the findings. Such findings which are based on research are considered reliable to understand the behavior of humans. This is exactly why psychology earns its place as both a behavioral science and a social science.

Why do some people respond so differently to the same situation

Human behavior is the outcome of numerous influences, not a single. The way we humans behaved in our past, our biological factors, our learning processes, our cultural roots all combine together to form our behaviors. The behavior is like a beautiful painting, which has a unique color combination, texture, shades and brushstrokes. Due to this reason each individual is unique and different from others.

The Brain: Our Real Control Room

The brain runs every choice we make. It is small with just 3 pounds of tissue,  yet it never rests. It takes in what our senses tell us. It stores memories. It solves problems. It manages our emotions. It helps us decide what to do next. Here’s an example. You hear a sudden noise behind you. Your ears catch it right away. Your brain asks a quick question, is this safe or not? Within seconds, your body either calms down or gets ready to act. Most of this happens before you even notice you are thinking. The brain works even while we sleep. It coordinates well with the mental processes of communication, responding and understanding different ideas.

The Driving Force of Human Behavior

Children learn from imitation and observation. They grasp the abilities to speak, listen and study from the environment. Observing the environment around them, children learn new ideas, behaviors of people. The early years children are taught to build good habits by the care givers. Therefore they gain confidence to speak and learn to copy their caregivers. Only kids but the elders also copy others in their life. Friends in their circle apply peer pressure and want to do everything their friends do in their lives. In this way, we realize that each one among us imitates others, unknowingly. We gain new experiences each day and apply new learning.

Emotional Side of Human Behavior

Careful reasoning is crucial for good decisions. Mostly our emotions are the significant influence behind our choices. Have you ever thought about entering a room, where some unfamiliar faces are sitting. Firstly you feel calm and a little bit hesitant, where to start? Feeling nervous, you might stay silent. The room hasn’t changed. Only your feelings have. Fear makes us careful. Joy pushes us to explore. Anger can cause quick reactions. Sadness can quietly take away our drive. Emotions don’t replace thinking. They walk beside it, shaping our choices every day.

Can we truly predict human behavior?

Psychologists have the ability to identify patterns of human behavior. But truly speaking they can not predict the choices of individuals. As we know that the physical objects work according to fixed laws. Human beings have feelings, emotions, and memories as an essential part. They have the ability to adapt into new cultures and live in a new environment. These factors make humans more flexible rather than being rigid. Humans easily learn new things, form new beliefs. They know how to adjust according to new conditions. It is not necessary if you could not do something in the past, you won’t be able to do in the future as well. A person who faced stage fright may overcome this challenge and become a confident speaker with practice and gaining confidence. A child who is slow in learning, if makes up his mind to work hard, can achieve high grades in his class. People have the ability to transform themselves according to the situation and will power. In this way the psychologists have identified some general patterns of the human behavior but they can’t come up with exact answers specifically for an individual.

Why Understanding Behavior Matters

The study of human behavior is a vast subject. It is not limited to research in the labs to uncover the secrets of mind. Learning human behavior is a new experience every time. The way humans behave gives us practical knowledge about every life. Each day, we come closer to our dear ones and understand them in a better way. In this way, we improve our ways to become good friends, parents or siblings.

A Moment to Reflect

Although we interact with so many people every day, we are still discovering the new aspects of human behavior. The behavior of human is a remarkable discovery in the field of psychology. We as humans do not follow as we did something in the past, but we change in our life, therefore new behavior patterns are discovered. People do not stay and practice the same, they change, grow and develop with new approaches and to gain new experiences. In this way our choices are also not the same, throughout our life. What we loved in our childhood, we would not prefer now, because with time and conditions the choices change. Understanding the logic behind human behavior can help us gain confidence, wisdom and improve our communication skills.
